With 24 new trains to be added to the current 40 trains, commuters can look forward to a 60 per cent increase in the passenger capacity on the Circle Line within the a year. According to Channel NewsAsia, the new trains will include “commuter-centric” features, such as a Dynamic Route Map Display above each door, more straphangers, and gap fillers to minimise the gap between platform and train, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) yesterday. “These trains are part of LTA’s continuous efforts to add more capacity to the system so that commuters can enjoy a better travel experience. LTA will continue to monitor the ridership along the various rail lines and work with the operators to augment the capacity and meet the long-term projected demand,” LTA said in a press release. Seven of the 24 new trains to be put into service by mid-2016 have already been progressively deployed on the CCL from Jun 24, the LTA said. By the end of the year, another three to five trains will be put into service. The additional trains will see the time between train arrivals during peak hours improve from the current 3.5 minutes to about 2.7 minutes, while off-peak waiting time will be reduced from 7 minutes to no more than 5 minutes, the LTA said. The Circle Line saw disruptions of about four hours in September 2011 and December 2013, but it’s probably unlikely that commuters will experience another breakdown of the century as the LTA said that it has "conducted extensive and rigorous tests to ensure the new trains are tested to the fullest".  Photo: daarwasik via Flickr
