Merlion water fountainThere's no need to panic, but it's a wise move to start conserving water. Now. Natural resources-deprived Singapore has four sources of water and the largest of them is running low. Malaysia's Linggiu Reservoir, which releases water into the Johor River, which in turn supplies up to 60 percent of Singapore's daily water needs, is at an unprecedented low of about 55 per cent because of the dry weather, according to Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. Singapore consumes about 410 million gallons a day and it is allowed to draw a maximum of 250 millions a day from the Johor River under the 1962 water agreement with Malaysia, according to Today. To avoid water supply from reaching critical level, there could be restrictions like temporarily halting water features like fountains.
