With the help of the online community, a Singapore-registered car that was stolen in Johor Bahru on July 5 was returned to its owner and the suspected car thief was apprehended.
According to The Straits Times, car owner Mr Joe Ong had left his white Honda Civic at a car wash near KSL City Mall in Johor Baru at around 6pm on July 5. He was told that his car had been driven off by his "friends" at around 6.30pm when he returned to collect it at 10pm. A credit card, which was in the car, was used twice.
Mr Joe Ong and his brother, Eric Ong, then posted a public appeal online for help to locate his car, and a video on July 24 showing a white Honda driving off without paying after refuelling in Port Dickson was shared widely online.
Those who saw the appeal and the video did some online sleuthing, and the car was eventually tracked down in Malacca where the suspected car thief was nabbed.
The remarkable story of how the car was lost and recovered was recounted by the car owner's brother Mr Eric Ong on Facebook.
