A man almost got away with his crime when he fled to China, but he stupidly got deported back here to face charges for selling rented cars across the Causeway.
50-year-old Lai Kah Good had been desperate to clear up his debts and concocted a plan with at least three others to for some quick, easy cash, TODAY reports. On four occasions, Lai would rent vehicles from car rental companies and pass it on to a friend who would then drive it to Malaysia. Once there, two other accomplices would sell them to unknown buyers. They would each take a cut from the transaction.
Police were first alerted when staff from K & K Limousine Services and Motorway Car Rentals lodged reports in December 2004 when Lai failed to return the cars. By that time, the man had already fled the country.
In China, Lai got himself into a drug-related incident and served six years in prison for his offence. One of his accomplices during the car-selling spree has been arrested while the other two are still at large.
After coming back to Singapore, Lai was sentenced to jail once again — this time for a period of 32 months.
