Pasir Ris to get first ever hawker centre by 2017

Hawker centreCome 2017, the district of Pasir Ris will see their first ever hawker centre — which is weird news because shouldn't all neighbourhoods have food centres by now?  Apparently, this hawker centre will be a modern one, boasting family-friendly features such as lowered seats for children, diaper-changing and nursing rooms and even lifts, The New Paper reports. A multi-storey carpark above the hawker centre will offer parking space for both vehicles and bicycles.  The makan venue near the Pasir Ris Sports Centre will also sport an over 800 seating capacity as well as 45 cooked food stalls (why would anyone want uncooked food stalls?), and will be shaped in a fan-like arrangement so that "diners can feel like they are having their meals in a park". Much wow.  The hawker centre will be within walking distance of Pasir Ris MRT station, and will launch by 2017. For now, Pasir Ris residents apparently have to travel far and wide to other districts for food, because no hawker centre exists yet.  Photo: Tiberiu Ana via Flickr
