There has been an increase not only in the number of Singaporeans marrying foreigners in the past decade, more foreign spouses of Singapore citizens have also been granted permanent residency status in recent years.
"An average of 4,000 spouses received Permanent Resident status per year from 2010 to 2014, up from an average of 3,800 per year between 2010 and 2012," a Channel NewsAsia report quotes Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.
Around 62,100 spouses were granted PR status as at Dec 31, 2014, compared to 58,600 at the end of 2012, according to the report.
Also early this year, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, under the initiative of the Ministry of Social and Family Development, began offering a pre-marriage Long Term Visit Pass to non-resident partners of Singaporean citizens, a way for couples to try it out in Singapore before committing to marriage.
