Ronson Culibrina'Untitled' by Ronson Culibrina In his first solo exhibition in Singapore, Filipino artist Ronson Culibrina reinterprets the works of Filipino master painter Juan Luna, who was trained in the tradition of Academic art in the 19th century. More than a century after the artist’s death, this old-masters, Academic style is still evident beneath Culibrina’s layers of paint. You see the eyes of a dignified man peering out, with the rest of his face covered by Culibrina’s thick strokes of paint. The bright colours used in the work contrast with the muted, neutrals of the figure underneath, based on one of Luna’s portraits. Paired with the abstract brushstrokes, Culibrina successfully gives the work a contemporary feel that is immediately recognizable to the viewer.   See more works by Ronson Culibrina in Blood Compact at Michael Janssen Gallery (9 Lock Road, Gillman Barracks #02-21, S108937; +65 6734 8948). Till Jul 12, Tue-Sat 12pm-7pm, Sun 12pm-6pm.  This column is in collaboration with The Artling – a curated selection of Art from Asia’s best galleries and artists, www.theartling.com.
