The mobile column, or military vehicle parade, returns to NDP 2015 after five years and is set to awe spectators with a grand convoy of 177 combat and emergency vehicles, with at least seven of them never before seen in previous parades.
According to The Straits Times, these include an armoured engineer vehicle used to overcome obstacles and allow forces to advance, and a 22m-long specialised marine craft used to defend bases.
The NDP Mobile Column was last featured in 2010, and displays the advanced technological capabilities of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
"This year's mobile column will hark back to mobile columns of the past, all the way back to the original mobile column in 1969, where it's a grand, formal and precise display of military capabilities and military precision,” said Major Cai Dexian, chairman of the mobile column, during a media preview on Saturday.
This two-kilometre long convoy will start from Nicoll Highway and move along St. Andrew’s Road to pass the Padang. A section of the mobile column will then proceed to form the Celebration Trail which will roll through the Marina Bay area and end at the Esplanade Bridge.
Befitting of the size of the display, the theme of this year's mobile column is "strength".
