Last week, former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad claimed that Malays in Singapore are a marginalised bunch as well as second-class citizens — but the country's former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim has since disagreed with the claim and would actually like to see Malaysian Malays become more like their neighbouring counterparts.
The claim arrived in the latest round of attacks launched against current Prime Minister Najib Razak, whom Dr. Mahathir has been publicly condemning and calling for his resignation. He claimed that PM Najib would lead the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition to ruin in the next federal polls, and would lead to Malays in Malaysia being like the "marginalized" Malays in Singapore.
Zaid however tweeted that PM Najib would actually make Malays more extremist like the Taliban — and that if Malays under Najib would be more like those in Singapore, he would be more than happy to support the Prime Minister.
According to Channel NewsAsia, Zaid actually wishes Malays in Malaysia were more like their counterparts here, as Singaporean Malays are reaping "the benefits of a modern advanced economy" and are "encouraged by political leaders to develop themselves". He also noted about Singapore's "good and fair" housing policy, which would greatly benefit Malaysian Malays.
He also disagreed that Singaporean Malays are being marginalised, even though they're a minority. "...it would be silly for the PAP to even think of discriminating against Malays and risk forfeiting 15 per cent of the vote", Channel NewsAsia reported him to say.
