The Taskforce on Youth and Drugs is set to release a report this Friday that will provide a review of the drug situation in Singapore and propose a series of strategies to tackle the drug abuse problem, and the target group is none other than the young and well-educated.
This has a lot to do with their attitude shift towards drugs, said co-chair of the Taskforce and Second Minister for Home Affairs Mr Masagos Zukifli in an interview with Channel NewsAsia. According to Mr Masago, the popularity of cannabis-laced brownies, cookies (cannabis-cuits) and candy (cann-dybis) in the U.S. channels the wrong impression that the drug is completely safe when consumed in moderation recreationally. Remember the popular phrase “Come to the Dark Side, we have cookies”?
The decriminalisation of cannabis in the U.S. also contributes to this misconception, but it was actually implemented to address the problem of overcrowded prisons since people won’t be jailed if they got caught for cannabis possession, said Mr Masagos. Thankfully, the authorities here are taking some serious action before the drug problem becomes impossible to weed out.
