5 months jail term for unruly IMH resident who abused staff and destroyed propertyPutting the 'mental' in mental illness, a resident of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) has been sent to jail after her antics went way out of hand, even according to lunacy standards.  23-year-old Joanne Lim, severely suffering from borderline personality disorder, was first warded at the IMH, where she physically abused its employees. On one occasion last November, she pulled the hair of a nurse who was trying to stop her from banging her head on a glass counter out of anger, TODAY reports.  She was then transferred to a welfare home in Buangkok Green, where she was taken to a padded cell for safety reasons after shouting and throwing food on the floor in March. She tore fabric off the wall lining and tried to commit suicide by strangling herself with it.  In April, while being assessed at IMH to check if she was suitable for a mandatory treatment order, she punched the head of a senior staff nurse repeatedly as she felt unhappy staying at the institute and the nurse would scold her for unruly behaviour.  Though it may be easy enough to excuse her actions due to mental illness, they found that she had been of sound mind during the offences. In court, Lim mentioned that she was sorry and that she would agree to cooperate if admitted to a welfare home again. She has since been sentenced to five months in jail for two counts of voluntarily causing hurt and one count of wilfully destroying the property of a welfare home.  Photo: Wikimedia Commons   brightcove.createExperiences();
