Fewer dengue cases thus far this year, but warmer months ahead mean more mosquitoesHalf the year has come and gone, and the National Environmental Agency (NEA) has found that Singapore has been experiencing lesser dengue cases thus far, as compared to the last two years.  Though a total of 3,309 cases of the mosquito-borne tropical disease were reported between January and May this year, it's still a significant 45 percent lower volume than last year's figure of 6,015 for the same period — meaning folks are actually responding to the everlasting campaign against dengue.  NEA however urges everyone to stay vigilant as the warmer months of June to October arrive, posing higher risks of transmission of dengue due to accelerated breeding and maturation cycles for the Aedes mosquitoes, as well as faster multiplication of the dengue virus in the tiny bloodsuckers. "As of mid-May 2015, NEA has conducted more than 560,000 inspections and destroyed over 6,000 mosquito breeding habitats, of which the majority was found in homes," they wrote in a press release. "From NEA’s inspections so far, most breeding habitats are found in homes – in domestic containers such as pails, flower pots and plates, trays, and ornamental containers such as vases."
