A study conducted by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and non-governmental organisation HealthServe has revealed the dismal quality of food catered to Bangladeshi construction workers in Singapore, which has prompted calls for greater government regulation of caterers that would go a long way in ensuring food safety and security.
According to TODAY, a survey pertaining to the quality and hygiene of food revealed that 86.2 percent of respondents had fallen ill after consuming catered food, while nearly all were dissatisfied with the quality of the food, with some describing eating bread like chewing a tyre. A foreign worker’s job is truly demanding; not only do they have to work their arms but also their jaws.
Workers often had to stomach catered food that was “foul-smelling”, “rock solid” and poor in nutrition having been prepared way in advance. The complaint of poor nutrition for foreign workers is not a new one and the shocking state of meals catered to foreign workers reveals what this country is built on – stale food and miserable portions.
