Sticky Fines for Sticky Fingers: Stiffer penalties for illegal ads Those who insist on sticking it to the authorities by literally sticking illegal advertisements on street infrastructure — including bus stops, lamp posts and pillars of sheltered walkways — will face the wrath of the government for their act of defiance. In its valiant quest to rid the streets of unsightly advertisements, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has stepped up its national campaign against culprits. From this month, the fines for repeat offenders will be increased from $300 to $500 in the hopes of getting potential offenders to think twice before landing themselves in this sticky situation. Among the LTA’s vast arsenal of weapons to combat illegal ads also includes anti-stick paint, which has been applied extensively on more than 16,900 lamp posts and road infrastructure at nearly 600 locations. Not only is the special paint a pain in the ass for sticker-happy individuals, but it also makes removal of the pesky ads more time and cost effective. Its implementation, together with low-cost advertisement boards near selected MRT stations, has since reduced the number of illegal ads and helped to maintain the cleanliness of the streets, according to the LTA. Soon, Singaporeans won’t have sticky fingers anymore.  Photo: choo chin nian via Flickr
