Young sprinter Veronica Shanti Pereira entered history books yesterday when she managed to clinch the gold medal in the SEA Games 200m women's sprint event.
The 18-year-old runner crossed the finish line in 23.60s — a personal best and national record, leaving the Philippines' Kayla Richardson and Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Oanh trailing behind at 23.71s and 23.92s respectively.
Her win ends the 42-year wait for a female sprinter to score gold since Glory Barnabas in the SEA Games back in 1973, according to various media reports.
This would also be Pereira's second medal of the Games — she bagged the bronze medal on Tuesday in the 100m sprint.
