An Indian domestic worker has been sentenced to jail after being convicted of causing serious hurt to her employer's child in a fit of frustration.
24-year-old Indian national Lalkhawngaihi admitted to dropping the nine-month-old baby from height into her cot, as well as forcefully pulling the child's hand to drag her out of the cot earlier in April at a flat in Choa Chu Kang.
She had actually been hired last August to take care of the infant, The Straits Times reports. She was instructed to feed the baby whenever she woke up in the wee hours of the morning.
The domestic helper woke up to the crying baby at 4.30am on Apr 10. Frustrated by her sleep being interrupted, Lalkhawngaihi went to the cot and carried the child for a while before dropping the baby into the cot from a height of 15cm.
The shocked baby was quiet for a while, but started crying again. The maid then pulled the baby's arm forcefully and lifted the child to the kitchen to get some milk.
The employers however saw the whole thing on CCTV after being woken up by their child's cries. A police report was lodged the next day.
Lalkhawngaihi's sentenced have been backdated to Apr 13, and is deemed to have completed her jail term after serving time in remand. She could have been imprisoned for up to two years and/or fined a maximum amount of $5,000.
