Following the continued success over getting commuters to travel outside of rush hours, the Land Transport Authority have announced that their Free Pre-Peak Travel initiative will be extended for another year to June 30 2016.
Under the scheme, train commuters who travel earlier and end their journey before 7.45am on weekdays at 18 designated MRT stations in the city area get to enjoy a free ride, while those who exit their stations between 7.45am and 8am gets a discount of up to $0.50 off their train fare.
So far, the scheme has managed to reduce the number of commuters during the morning peak period to about 8 percent — basically ensuring a more evenly distributed morning train ridership and easing the maddening rush hour crowds.
“The proportion of commuters who have shifted their travel patterns due to the Free Pre-peak Travel scheme is significant and has stabilised after two years," enthused Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Transport Josephine Teo. "We hope that more people, who are able and willing to shift their travelling times, will benefit."
FYI, the MRT stations that will continue offering this initiative till next June are Bayfront, Bras Basah, Bugis, Chinatown, City Hall, Clarke Quay, Dhoby Ghaut, Downtown, Esplanade, Lavender, Marina Bay, Orchard, Outram Park, Promenade, Raffles Place, Somerset, Tanjong Pagar and Telok Ayer.
