A train driver's crime spree across the Woodlands district — which included housebreaking, burglary and molestation — has finally come to an end after a district court sentenced him to five years in jail and nine strokes of the cane.
Muhamad Nizam Ahmad, 31, pleaded guilty to six out of the 16 charges, The Straits Times reports. His multiple offences took place in several HDB blocks in Woodlands Drive 15 from 2009 till 2014.
In May 2009, he trespassed into a house but fled when he saw a 12-year-old girl inside. The following year in July, he managed to fish out a key from a unit to unlock its grille gate and entered the house before molesting a sleeping 18-year-old girl and stealing $20 from her wallet. In 2011, Nizam entered a unit through the unlocked door and attempted to molest a 28-year-old woman but she broke free. Last year, he failed in his attempt when a half-asleep woman spotted him opening her bedroom door while carrying a torchlight — he fled when she shouted for her domestic helper.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Michelle Lu cited that Nizam's crime spree was premeditated, and hard to detect.
