Aside from the probably cursed JEM mall and a Genting Hotel that serves the industrial area, the district of Jurong will be seeing another seemingly exciting addition to their sleepy neighbourhood: the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High Speed Rail terminus.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced plans for the terminus to be located in Jurong East earlier today after the annual Leaders' Retreat with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak, Channel NewsAsia reports.
Why Jurong East though? Apparently it's because the western district is being planned to be transformed into a second Central Business District. Once the terminus is built, it'll be connected to five other stations in Malaysia including Nusajaya, Batu Pahat, Muar, Melaka Seremban and Kuala Lumpur. The High Speed Rail project — which was first agreed upon in 2013 — promises major interconnectivity between Singapore and Malaysia. Imagine a 90-minute train ride between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
The Prime Ministers have noted that the initial target of completion of the project in 2020 will have to be re-assessed due to the scale of the project. No duh.
They've yet to agree upon the new completion date.
