Three men appeared in court yesterday to face charges for insurance fraud, after allegedly lodging false accident statements in a ploy to get two insurance companies to pay for vehicle damages.
TODAY reports that 44-year-old Abdul Aziz Kassim, 51-year-old Rosli Ahmed and 53-year-old Mahmud Hammed have been accused of filing damaged property claims with Direct Asia Insurance and India International Insurance last year for motor accidents that never actually took place.
The trio had apparently lodged false statements for motor accidents in 2011, corroborating each other's stories by claiming that each of their motor vehicles had been involved in the accident with the other two.
Both insurance companies processed their claims and each man received $10,829.35 from Direct Asia Insurance and $22,761.30 from India International Insurance.
In court, they each faced two charges against them for abetting one another to commit the crime as well as inducing the insurance companies into delivering payments for false claims. If convicted, they could each be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.
