It's a star-studded line-up for sure for the Sing50 concert on Aug 7 at the National Stadium, where over 70 local artists, pianists, rappers, a 1,000-strong choir and the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra promise a truly Singaporean music spectacle.
With that in mind, why the hell is former Black Eyed Peas member Apl.de.ap in the line-up?
Organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times, the concert looks to celebrate the nation's 50th birthday in an excessively grand style — and with 50 Steinway pianos (costing $26,00 each) bought just for the concert, you'd expect nothing less.
Promising an experience that'll take folks through Singapore's multi-cultural music history featuring local icons such as Mandarin pop superstar Stefanie Sun, rock 'n' roll godfather Ramli Sarip, renowned composer Dick Lee, veteran vocal powerhouse Babes Conde and eminent jazz pianist Jeremy Monteiro. Even the likes of the newer generation of musicians including rapper THELIONCITYBOY, soulful songman Dru Chen and comical rock 'n' rollers The Pinholes are set to make an appearance in the Sing50 concert.
Again, that begs the question; why the hell is freakin' Apl.De.Ap playing in the concert? We can't quite recall the time when "Don't Phunk with My Heart", "My Humps", and "Pump It" actually contributed to Singapore's music landscape.
Whatever the reason behind his inclusion in the lineup, he'll still be playing at the National Stadium along with many other artists on Aug 7. Tickets are available online at $20 — stay updated on the Sing50 Facebook page.
