Internet service provider MyRepublic are not fucking around when they talked about getting into the telecommunications business — they're giving out 1,000 free SIM cards as part of their three-month trial.
Users of MyRepublic's SIM cards will receive unlimited 4G data for mobile surfing and phone calls through data via apps including WhatsApp, Viber, The Straits Times reports. Speaking to the paper, MyRepublic managing director Yap Yong Teck explains that it would simulate the flat fee, unlimited-data plan they plan to launch.
MyRepublic announced plans to become Singapore's fourth telco earlier in March, with a focus on mobile data. Should they succeed in becoming a telecommunications operator they promise to deliver generous data bundles and make unlimited mobile data plans the norm.
The Infocomm Development Authority has yet to award the fourth telco licence. Earlier this month, transport operator SMRT threw their hat into the telco ring by teaming up with local tech firm Consistel, promising cheaper phone bills should they become the fourth telco operator.
