A Singaporean man accused of recruiting a child for the purposes of exploitation has become the first man to be charged under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act which came into place last month.
The newly established anti-human trafficking laws precisely defines what exactly entails human trafficking as well as the penalties involved for those who break the law, the powers given to enforcement agencies and support for victims.
TODAY reports that 24-year-old Muhammad Khairulanwar Rohmat allegedly recruited a 15-year-old girl at a Starbucks Coffee outlet in Orchard last Wednesday for sex — with consent — in the men's toilet at the fifth level of Cuppage Plaza. They carried out the deed that same afternoon.
Aside from the charge under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act, he was also charged for having sex with a minor. For exploiting the child, he faces a fine of $100,000 and/or 10 years in jail, as well as six strokes of the cane. If convicted for the latter charge, he could be jailed for up to 10 years and/or fined.
The case will be deliberated again on Apr 29.
