The teen who prowled around Yishun with his friends to beat up foreign workers to try out their martial arts skills was sentenced to 10 days in detention yesterday, but the prosecution wants a stiffer penalty.
Last year, 19-year-old Daryl Lim Jun Liang and three of his friends attacked four construction workers in Yishun, assaulting them and leaving them with multiple injuries. Lim had been taking martial arts lessons prior to the attacks, and wanted to test out his skills.
Under the terms of his sentence yesterday, he will have to report to a supervising officer every day for a year, and will have to wear an electronic tag as well as observe a curfew from 10am to 6pm. He was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service within the year.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai however has chosen to appeal against the teen's sentence, The New Paper reports. Lai maintained that there was a clear premeditated intent to pick on and assault a specific group, and urged the court to sentence Lim to the Reformative Training Centre — where stints can last between 18 to 30 months.
