A husband and wife have been charged with the murder of 27-year-old waitress Annie Ee Yu Lian, who was found dead in their flat on the third storey of Block 878 Woodlands Avenue 9 on Monday morning.
35-year-old Pua Hak Chuan and wife 31-year-old Tan Hui Zhen are understood to be the owners of the flat, and the young waitress is a tenant at the flat.
It was believed that the married couple had been physically abusing their younger flatmate.
Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao, Ee's colleagues at Causeway Point's Hot Tomato restaurant reported that she often arrived at work covered in bruises, and would try to cover them up with concealer and by wearing caps.
At one time, Ee even had to take medical leave to get treatment for an ear injury, which required surgery.
Tan, which the waitress referred to as her 'big sister' would often call the restaurant to check up on Ee, who would freeze up and appear frightened at every mention of her flatmate.
Last Wednesday, Ee turned up for work with a red, swollen face and had difficulty walking. She was told to go home that day.
According to Shin Min, Ee and Tan was last seen having an argument with Pua on Sunday afternoon. After two loud sounds were heard from the flat that night, Ee was found dead the next morning.
The couple will be back in court on Apr 22, and could face the death penalty if they are convicted of murder.
