Stories like this warm the cockles of the heart.
A 37-year-old senior staff nurse at Changi General Hospital just happened to be in Little India for dinner with her husband last Friday when she ended up saving a life.
Madam Thanaletchumi Shanmugam and her husband was walking on the street when they came across a crowd of people gathered around Indian national Arumugam Gopinath, who was writhing and gasping for air, reports Ng Jun Sen in The New Paper.
He had a heart attack.
She immediately checked the man's pulse, and sensing none, proceeded to perform CPR "despite the protests from some bystanders who wanted to wait for emergency services."
By the time a representative from the Singapore Civil Defense Force arrived, Gopinath had already opened his eyes and was breathing normally. He was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and has been discharged "at his own risk".
But Madam Shanmugam's generosity doesn't stop here."I know the hospital fees for tourists or foreigners can be quite high. But he is definitely in no state to be moving about," Madam Thanaletchumi tells The New Paper. "I have helped him, but it's disappointing that I can't help him all the way." She and her husband would like to chip in on the cost of Gopinath's medical expenses.
