Following the passing of the nation's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, his family politely requested no wreaths, flowers or condolence advertisement while all donations received have gone to the Education Fund, NTUC-U Care Fund, Garden City Fund and the various community self-help groups — and over $1.6 million has been contributed in his name.
According to The Straits Times, the Education Fund received the most donations with over $1.3 million from both corporate and individual donors. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Education remarked that the fund will be channeled into the Lee Kuan Yew Awards, which are given out annually to students in schools and tertiary instirtutions.
The Garden City Fund received over $190,000 from more than 160 individuals and organisations, while the National Trades Union Congress got $156,455. The late Lee had championed the causes of a green environment as well as the rights and interests of Singapore's workforce during his tenure.
