For choking a taxi driver, Norwegian national Arne Corneliussen has been sentenced to imprisonment for 10 weeks.
The 50 year-old admitted to causing hurt to cabbie Chan Chuan Heng in September last year after a night of drinking at Clarke Quay.
According to The Straits Times, Corneliussen, a Singapore permanent resident, spotted Chan's cab at the intersection of Circular Road and North Canal Road around 1am and was about to board it. He was however rebuffed — Chan told him that he would not be able to take any passengers as he needed to go to the toilet.
Refusing Chan's need to answer the call of nature, Corneliussen slapped his victim's right cheek and placed the 46-year-old in a choke hold for about 15 seconds before two witnesses intervened and called the police.
Chan sustained a wound on his right arm and a fracture in his left foot. Reportedly, the Norwegian already gave the cabbie $30,000 in compensation.
