The Jubilee Bridge — linking Merlion Park and the Esplanade's waterfront promenade — was opened on Sunday, a month ahead of its initial launch date.
This was to allow Singaporeans to bid farewell to the late Lee Kuan Yew, said National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan on his Housing Matters blog.
Intended to open for public access next month, it was brought forward to facilitate the thousands of Singaporeans lining the Esplanade Bridge on Sunday — all of whom remained committed to paying their respects despite the pouring rain.
Khaw recounted that it was the late statesman himself who suggested the construction of the bridge during a visit to Marina Bay, observing that the walkway along Esplanade bridge was too narrow.
The 220-metre long pedestrian bridge will remain open and will see an official launch in November as the Jubilee Bridge to commemorate SG50.
