Just a couple of days ago, Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob made an appeal to Singaporeans to stay in the country to celebrate the National Day together, following the declaration for an extra public holiday — making it a welcome four-day-long weekend from Aug 7 to Aug 10.
It seems that a majority of Singaporeans heard her passionate plea and said "Fuck it, it's my holiday". The New Paper reported a 738 percent increase in bookings for flights leaving the country on Aug 7 this year, as compared to bookings last year.
Reportedly, the exponential increase in flight bookings occurred within 48 hours of the public holiday announcement too.
Others are being even smarter by booking flights on Aug 6, ensuring an even longer holiday overseas instead of frolicking around Singapore to celebrate the country's Jubilee year.
Currently, Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, Penang and London are among the choice destinations for the SG50 National Day revellers, while Bangkok comes up on top with the highest number of bookings for Aug 7.
Flight booking monitoring platform Skyscanner aren't surprised by the revelations, as their historical data showed an indisputable pattern for holidaymakers utilizing long weekends to travel.
