A moment of folly has landed 25-year-old Muhammad Syawal Kamis a roller coaster ride straight to prison for stealing 75 tickets to Universal Studio Singapore, worth around $4,400 in total.
The former operations coordinator at Ace Tours & Travel had stolen the tickets at his workplace and managed to sell 19 of them at $50 each, earning $950 for himself, The New Paper reports.
He committed the theft after spotting the stack of tickets stored in a cupboard in the manager's office, grabbing a bunch and hiding them in his pocket. After he realised that he had taken too many, he planned to return 50 tickets but did not get a chance to go back into the manager's office.
Two days later, the travel agency's managing director made a police report after discovering the theft — with Syawal as the main suspect. By that time, Syawal had already sold 19 tickets online and seven of those had been used. The remaining 12 tickets were denied entry into Universal Studios Singapore.
Syawal threw away the remaining 56 tickets after his senior colleague asked him if he had stolen them.
The police soon went to the agency's office to interview him and his colleagues, where Syawal admitted to the theft.
In court, his lawyer remarked that he had spent ill-gotten earnings on daily and family expenses. He was sentenced to four months in jail.
