Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan lambastes about plunging standard of cleanliness in Singapore Got a tip? Send it to us at singapore@coconuts.co. Litterbugs, your days are numbered. Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan expressed his disappointment in Singapore's plummeting standard of cleanliness in Parliament yesterday, noting the doubling numbers of litter items observed or collected over the past couple of years. "Such a blasé attitude towards littering reflects a lack of pride in your own country, as well as a lack of respect and consideration for others," he asserts. "Therefore, we have to step up other measures." He also notes the troubling increase in high-rise littering, with 2,500 complaints received last year. As such, high-resolution, high-rise video surveillance have been installed, and more than 500 enforcement actions have been taken.  In an effort to handle the burgeoning littering problem, cleaners working under various town councils will be given a day off this year to give residents the opportunity to clean up their own neighbourhood.  Good luck with that!
