38-year-old construction worker Cheong Chap Mun has been sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment yesterday for taking an upskirt video of a woman on an MRT station escalator.
In June 2012, the Singapore-based Malaysian national had switched on his mobile phone's video recorder, placed it in his bag facing upwards and placed it in between the woman's legs while riding on the escalator, The Straits Times reported.
The incident only came to light 11 days later when he was caught taking pictures of a female passenger's upper body with his mobile phone on the bus. When his device was seized by the police, his upskirt videos discovered.
In court, it was revealed that Cheong had been convicted before in 2007 when he was fined for possession of an obscene film. The prosecution also pressed that there was a risk that the videos could have been circulated, aggravating the humiliation for his victim.
On his end, the construction worker asked for a lighter sentence, saying that he regrets his actions and will mend his ways, along with the fact that he will be getting married in May and has to take care of his elderly mother.
He could have been jailed for up to a year and fined for insulting the modesty of a woman.
