Mar 10 of 1965 was a tragic day. Three people died and at least 33 others were injured following an explosion fom a time bomb planted by Indonesian saboteurs at the MacDonald House along Orchard Road in the heat of Konfrontasi, where Indonesia openly opposed the formation of Malaysia, the merger between Singapura and Malaya from '63 to '65.
Though the bombings had already become a frequent occurence (a total of 29 bombs were set by the end of the tumultous period), the MacDonald House bombing proved to be the most destructive.
To pay tribute on the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, a memorial to the victims of Konfrontasi was unveiled at Dhoby Ghaut Green yesterday, facing the MacDonalds building.
The New Paper reports that the ceremony was attended by families of those who were killed and injured in the bombing, as well as veteran soldiers and volunteers who had contributed their services during that era. "Words cannot repay the debt we owe to these veterans, and to their fellow comrades who had laid down their lives," says Minister of Culture, Communication and Youth Lawrence Wong, who was guest of honour at the ceremony. "But with our actions, we can keep faith with them and what they stand for."
