Dudes, it’s time to practice your Joey Tribbiani “How you doin’?” line. Singapore has been named as the second most popular country for female tourists to travel solo, according to travel site TripAdvisor in a media release yesterday.
Siem Reap, Bali and Hong Kong were among the top five Asian travel spots, with Bangkok coming on top. As for long-haul trips, most solo female travellers chose London, followed by Paris, New York, Rome and Barcelona.
TripAdvisor’s Women’s Travel Survey revealed that the number of women travelling solo is rising. In 2014, 36 per cent of women in Southeast Asia stated they have travelled solo, compared to this year with 48 per cent.
The survey saw responses from 9,181 female respondents from Australia, USA, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. 431 of the results were from respondents in Southeast Asia, according to TripAdvisor.
Those who responded that they travel alone, 79 per cent of women in Southeast Asia said that they were planning a solo trip, higher than the global average of 74 per cent. 47 per cent responded that they were working on two to four solo trips in 2015.
60 per cent of Southeast Asian women said that they travel solo as it allows them to freely do what they want. 45 per cent of women said they like the independence and task of travelling by themselves. 32 per cent said they travelled alone as their family or friends could not afford the time or resources to accompany them.
Respondents also raised the advantages of solo travel. 62 per cent responded that it helped developed self-reliance and independency, 39 per cent said solo trips gave them confidence, while 38 per cent believed solo trips allowed them to discover other cultures.
The top priority of solo women travellers who responded to the survey was safety. TripAdvisor stated that 71 per cent of women refrained from heading out at night, 55 per cent stayed clear of quiet streets while 42 per cent tried not to behave like tourists.
Choice of lodging was important – 65 per cent said their accommodation had to make them feel safe, while 62 per cent favoured independent or boutique hotels when travelling alone.
While we can all attest to the fact that Singapore is a safe destination for all tourists, let’s just hope our over branding of SG50 won’t scare them off.
