4 youths were involved in a twisted Fight Club-esque encounter, after assaulting two foreign workers in Yishun.
Daryl Lim Jun Liang, Tan Jun Liang – both 18 years old – and two other 15-year-old-boys – who cannot be named due to their age – targeted innocent and weaker foreign workers. According to the report by The New Paper, the boys called their beat-ups “practice sessions”.
Lim pleaded guilty to attacking Chinese national Zuo Yu Nian on Oct 3. On top of that, an assault charge involving Indian national, Selvaraj Mandankumar, will be considered on 12 March during sentencing.
On September 21 last year, the four youths attacked Selvaraj at Block 288 Yishun Avenue 6 at around 6am. The encounter left Selvaraj bleeding from a cut on the upper lip.
12 days later, the youths launched their next attack in the vicinity. After meeting at the void deck of Block 228, Yishun Street 21 around 3am on October 3, they headed to Block 288 in search for their next victim.
At around 6am, they picked out 48-year-old Zuo, another construction worker who was strolling along the front of Block 289.
Before bolting off, the youths punched him numerous times on his face, leaving Zuo bleeding from the mouth.
In court on Monday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai told District Judge Lim Keng Yeow that both Selvaraj and Zuo suffered cuts on their lips. Both Zuo and Selvaraj went back to their dormitories after the meaningless attacks. In spite of their injuires, they did not seek medical treatment, in fear of losing income should they not turn up at work.
They intentionally targeted those who were smaller in stature and seemed weaker, avoiding those who were taller and bigger.
DPP Lai mentioned that Lim attacked foreign workers due to an awry experience in the past with foreign workers over a “staring incident”. No further details were provided.
Lim’s lawyer, claimed that his client’s victims only received minor injuries, and that his client’s parents will fork out compensation in the form of $250 each to the foreign workers. The compensation is due to reach the hands of the investigating officer today.
While Tan’s case is pending, the two 15-year-olds have been handled in court, and are each on 18-month probation. Lim is liable to two years jail and $5,000 in fines for voluntarily causing hurt.
