Folks here better stock up on their fish soon — the state of Johor Bahru will be restricting the export of five types of fish in view of the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, and Singapore will be especially hit hard.
The Star reports that the decision was made to ensure a sufficient supply of cencaru (torpedo scad), selar (yellowtail scad), kembong (short mackerel), pelaling (Indian mackerel) and selayang (round scad) in Johor so that prices will not go up during the festive season.
Johor Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries exco Ismail Mohamed remarked that he would be working closely with the Immigration Department to secure enforcement at checkpoints. He maintains that other fresh produce are sufficient to meet demands during the festive period.
