Not even two weeks into her job and she's already burnt bridges (among other things) with her employers. As it turns out, the domestic helper who was sent to hospital for smoke inhalation after the Serangoon North flat fire last Tuesday was the one who set it alight in the first place.
The New Paper reported that the 28-year-old Myanmar national was escorted by the police in handcuffs around the ruined flat yesterday as a suspect in the case, which the authorities have classified as mischief by fire.
According to the flat owner and the maid's employer Gina Ong, the domestic helper had been working for the family for only 11 days before the fire, who was employed to look after her four children.
Ong's mother-in-law had remarked that the maid showed signs of distress from the beginning — she would cry at 7pm every night. When asked, she would always say that she was alright.
While the police are investigating into the motives behind her incendiary act, the Ong family are facing difficulties finding alternative accommodations and recuperating their losses as 95 percent of their possessions were destroyed in the fire.
As for the maid, we can be sure that the she has already been... fired.
