Home breeder Mr. Alfred Khan has announced Designer Bengal is no longer giving away a free kitten due to the backlash it's received since announcing a contest for it on Wednesday (Jan. 28).
Mr. Khan wrote on Facebook: "Dear all, after much consideration, much reading and understanding the concerns from the public, we have come to a conclusion and decision to voiding our intention of the no fee adoption of our kitten."
He apologised for the "unnecessary commotion caused" by the giveaway and acknowledged the views offered by the "involved authorities", namely the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Singapore, which deemed it "categorically unethical".
Naturally, followers of the Designer Bengal Facebook page, especially those that've entered the contest, are disappointed that Mr. Khan has had to "bow down" to outside pressures.
Some have even expressed their dedication to Mr. Khan's work, with one saying he would "proudly promote Designer Bengal" and that if he could afford to have a cat the'd only buy one from him. Another called Mr. Khan a "responsible cat breeder as well as a cat lover".
