A scam that involved investing in professional gamblers snared around 150 people, who sank a total of $50 million into a scheme cooked up by a Malaysian company.
Under the attractively titled "Sure Win 4 U" scheme, the money received by investors would go towards funding professional gamblers, Channel NewsAsia reports. The victims were enticed by promises of returns by as much as three times their investment at the end of two years, with a monthly payout of five to nine percent upon investment. The returns would be in the form of online credits, which could be converted into cash by the company's team leaders.
Since September last year, the team leaders remain uncontactable, while the company's office in Kuala Lumpur was found to be abandoned.
Police confirmed that the 150 investors — comprising of both local and Chinese nationals — have lodged a report, and will be looking into the matter.
