A 54-year-old man is suspected of stealing abalone from a supermarket in VivoCity.
Strange as that sounds, theft of abalone, a delicacy commonly enjoyed during the Chinese New Year period, happens often this time of the year.
Last year, a woman was arrested for stealing four cans of abalone resting right by the cashier counter at a Giant Supermarket in Redhill. She was arrested after her second thieving attempt still in possession of the abalone, which was worth to about $160 in total.
Police were alerted to the case of the missing abalone at VivoCity on Jan. 21. Six cans worth about $416.80 were suspected stolen.
Tapping on CCTV footage, officers from the Crime Strike Force (CSF) of Bukit Merah West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) managed to establish the suspect and arrested him in Tampines on Jan. 26 at 9pm.
He will be charged in Court today for Theft in Dwelling, punishable by up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both.
