In their infinite wisdom, the Land Transport Authority spent three to four months paving a bicycle lane at Yishun before demolishing it the day after it was completed to make way for a new bus-stop.
The incident was first pointed out by Yishun resident Edward Lim, who was really looking forward to using the newly constructed path opposite Northpoint Shopping Centre, but alas, it was destroyed before anyone could use it. In a letter posted on the Straits Times, Lim raised questions of inefficiency and resource wastage in public agencies, and also references the odd Singaporean phenomenon of roads being dug up, repaved, and dug up again soon after.
The LTA has replied to the query, calling it an "isolated incident" in their continual effort to expand commuter, pedestrian and cycling initiatives, admitting that they could have done more to ensure effective coordination internally. "Nevertheless, we have used this incident as an example to further improve coordination between different projects to prevent inconvenience and disruption," LTA concludes.
