In an ironic twist, it was the rescuers that needed rescuing yesterday at VivoCity when a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) fire engine sunk into the mall's courtyard, leaving it stuck like a pig in mud.
According to the SCDF, the crew from Marina Bay Fire Station had been conducting fire safety inspections earlier on and were moving from the area when the flooring underneath the vehicle cracked under its sheer weight, trapping the rear wheel and dislodging several tiles.
The area around the fire truck was cordoned off by 6.45pm and a tow truck came along about an hour later to help lift the vehicle out. An eye-witness speaking to Channel NewsAsia reported seeing the fire truck's water tank drained in a bid to ease up some of its weight.
The fire engine was eventually lifted out of the VivoCity courtyard at 1.35am and was towed back to Marina Bay Fire Station at 2am.
The SCDF is currently working together with the mall's management to carry out investigations into the incident.
