An elderly woman had been conned out of her life savings when three men convinced her to purchase capacitors at cost price.
Investigations had revealed that two of the suspects had approached the woman one after another to persuade her to buy the capacitors at cost price, pretending that the products are to be sold to another buyer at a higher price to make a quick profit. The 'buyer' turned out to be their accomplice.
After she parted with $10,000, the three men were uncontactable. A report was then made with the police.
Through intensive enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division managed to establish the identities and trace the whereabouts of the trio. They were arrested at Balestier on Jan 15 together with another accomplice, who had a share of the loot. Packets of capacitors, monies, bags and mobile phones were seized as evidence.
If convicted of cheating, they may face up to 10 years in jail and a fine.
