LTA demands higher service standards from rail operators next yearProbably fed up with the overwhelming number of complaints lodged over disrupted train services, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) released a statement yesterday announcing that rail operators will have to meet significantly higher service standards from next year — failing which, they'll face a new set of penalties.  The New Paper reported that the LTA will be tracking and measuring rail disruptions more stringently to measure the commuters' experience more accurately.  Among the changes that will be made during the tightening of Operating Performance Standards, acceptable benchmarks for station services such as lifts, escalators, air-conditioning and security will be raised next year. Delays will also be measured on an end-to-end journey basis instead of measuring according to stations.  The higher standards come together with a higher level of penalizations for poor services — the financial penalties imposed upon errant rail operators will be based on a certain percentage of the operator's revenue instead of the existing fixed ceiling.  Just a few weeks into 2015 and already SMRT experienced a massive service disruption two days ago due to two beads and an earring.  Photo: shankar s. via Flickr
