!['Accidental rioter' gets imprisoned for unknowingly joining in assault during drunken state]()
Have you ever been so drunk that you joined a bar brawl without knowing why it was happening in the first place? Muhammad Suhaimi certainly has — and he's going to jail for it.
The 24-year-old man was sentenced to a month's imprisonment yesterday for unknowingly being part of an unlawful assembly, The New Paper reports.
Three men and a woman had made an unprovoked attack on 24-year-old Romanian national Viliman Daniel Vasile at Naughty Girl Pub in Orchard Towers, and the fracas soon included 46-year-old Eric Georges Martins (who was trying to protect Vasile) and 35-year-old Australian Gregory Victor Mckean (who was just drinking alone by himself).
As the three foreign men got savagely beaten up, the very tipsy Suhaimi witnessed the altercation and decided to join in the bashing.
In his defence, Suhaimi's lawyer called him "an accidental rioter" and that he had no idea what had transpired. As such, he was given a lower jail-time sentence as compared to the provocateurs, who have been imposed significantly longer imprisonment durations.
The altercation was captured on tape by a CCTV camera inside the pub. The three foreign nationals have received outpatient treatment at different hospitals.
