![Fiery Beginnings: Tampines flat fire ruins family's New Year's Day]()
Ah, the New Year — an occasion to start fresh and begin anew. For one family in Tampines however, they didn't expect a literally brand new beginning to 2015 when a blaze demolished their flat yesterday.
According to The New Paper, the family had been visiting their relatives in Yishun when the fire broke out at their home, located at Block 496C, Tampines Street 43. The blaze was believed to have started in the master bedroom in the afternoon.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had received a call at 1.24pm and deployed two fire engines, a light fire attack vehicle, an ambulance and a support vehicle to the scene. After breaking into the flat, they quickly extinguished the fire with a water jet as neighbours living on the same floor, one level above and one level below evacuated to the ground floor. No one was reported injured.
The family returned to their four-room flat only to find their home and posessions coated with soot and hopelessly soaked with water. Speaking to The New Paper about his now messed-up abode, 24-year-old resident Mohd Afiq remarked: "What a way to start the new year."
