Company banned from hiring foreign workers after discriminating against Singaporean employeesIn a first for Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has curbed the work pass privileges of a company operating here for engaging in discriminatory employment practices against local employees.  The discriminatory practices of Prime Gold International Pte Ltd — a shipping services company — were uncovered when its former Singaporean employees approached MOM earlier in June when they were successively retrenched, with their positions filled with new foreign workers.  It was revealed that Prime Gold had retrenched 13 Singaporean employees with the rationale of unsatisfactory work performances and inadequate qualifications — all of which were not substantiated.  Their vacancies were made open, but only to foreign workers soon after.  After assessing that the company has effectively denied Singaporeans fair opportunities for employment and career development, Prime Gold has been banned from hiring foreign workers for two years.  According to MOM, they've taken action against about 100 companies for posting discriminatory job advertisements in the past, but this is the first time that MOM has taken a forceful enforcement on a company which has discriminated against its Singaporean employees.
