Malaysia is currently battling what may be the worst case floods in decades along the northeastern peninsula, evacuating more than 160,000 people from their homes so far.
As such, the Singapore Government has stepped in to contribute $100,000 to support flood relief efforts in Malaysia, according to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.
The funds will be channelled through the Singapore Red Cross to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, and the financial aid will be complemented with purification units to help provide clean drinking water to those affected in the floods.
TODAY reports that the total amount of financial aid (including the $100,000 from the Singapore Government) contributed by the Singapore Red Cross sums up to $227,000 — or RM600,000.
Though the peninsula is regularly hit by flooding during the annual monsoons, this year's rains have been particularly tremendous, affecting eight Malaysian states and counting.
