Video: SG50 pays tribute to Singapore's musical golden years and pioneer generationAs the nation moves ever closer to 2015, the SG50 campaign celebrating Singapore's 50th year of independence is becoming more ardent in commemorating the country's storied history, and their latest video pays tribute to our golden years and the pioneer generation.  The short film commemorates the pioneering spirit lead by Singapore’s most celebrated pop groups of the ‘60s Shirley Nair and The Silver Strings, starring young singer-songwriter Weish and The Silver Strings themselves, much older but no less jubilant.   Though the band’s original vocalist Shirley Nair has been greatly missed — she passed away from cancer more than two decades ago — Weish herself takes on the vocal duties on their classic “You’re The Boy” while singer Aarika Lee portrays Nair, in a moving symbolic union between the old guards and the new crop of creative talents.  Shirley Nair and The Silver Strings were one of the most renowned pop outfits during Singapore’s musical heyday, playing regularly at Golden Venus’ tea dances and putting out several records before the government’s infamous clampdown on all things rock ’n’ roll. SG50 looks to move past that controversial past to focus on the positive things instead.  Photo: YouTube screengrab
